Dallas Builds Green documents the stages of inspiration, design, development, and construction of two energy efficient, sustainable residences in the North Dallas area. Follow along as we document our experiences during the process of bringing these visions to reality, and share the enjoyments of living green.
As a concerned citizen, my mission is to design and build a home that respects, conserves and sustains natural resources and materials, while it provides beauty, tranquility and shelter to its residents. The project honors protection of existing trees, favorable benefit from natural shade, use of supplemental solar energy and recycling of rain water. Throughout the planning and building process, ecological research, technology and community education is a principal emphasis.
As a young couple we believe it is time to change our habits (both living and consuming). With our own increased awareness about limited resources on the earth, the situations with landfill space and the harmful products continually added to them, and even the potentially harmful chemicals and materials encountered frequently in our own lives, clearly it is time for change.
Our hope is that while pioneering this green building project, interaction with the City of Dallas will help to shape new residential building codes to benefit the city, homeowner, and the planet. This new home breaks the trend seen in most new home construction and stands as an example that a home with space for a family and entertaining can be eco-conscious with focus on building products, waste, design, and living.
